Cultures and Histories Program

The Cultures and Histories Program is responsible for the collections of cultural material including Archaeology, Anthropology, Social History, Science and Technology and Industrial Heritage. Its collections are strongest in their links to Queensland, including Torres Strait Islands, and adjacent regions including the Northern Territory and the Western Pacific (Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu).

Our collections document the social and cultural life of humans in Queensland throughout time, relating Queensland and its place in the region to global histories. We collect, document and research material culture and interpret it for the public through exhibitions and galleries. Our staff and collections work across the Queensland Museum Network’s campuses:

  • Queensland Museum and Sciencentre, South Brisbane (QM&S);
  • The Museum of Tropical Queensland, Townsville (MTQ);
  • The Workshops Railway Museum, Ipswich (TWRM) and
  • Cobb + Co, Toowoomba (C+C)
  • Museum of Lands, Mapping and Surveying, Woolloongabba
  • Queensland Museum Research and Loans Centre, Hendra
  • The Program operates within the overall strategic framework and direction set by the Board of Queensland Museum.

QUEENSLAND MUSEUM (QM&S)

Queensland Museum Southbank, located at the heart of Brisbane’s cultural precinct, is the largest museum in the network. It connects visitors to Queensland, its people and their stories of the past, present and future. Queensland’s cultural heritage is found here.

THE MUSEUM OF TROPICAL QUEENSLAND (MTQ)

Museum of Tropical Queensland reveals life at the tropical edge, showcasing the unique cultural and natural heritage of North Queensland. The iconic exhibition featuring HMS Pandora, its history and maritime excavation is located here.

THE WORKSHOPS RAIL MUSEUM (TWRM)

The Workshop Rail Museum is the birthplace of rail in Queensland and home to an extensive collection of rail history. TWRM provides ‘hands on‘ and real experiences for visitors at the oldest continually operating railway workshop in Australia.

COBB+CO MUSEUM (C+C)

As the home of heritage trades, Cobb+Co houses the National Carriage Collection, hosts an active program of temporary exhibitions, runs engaging activities for all age groups and presents compelling displays that reflect the diverse communities of Toowoomba.

MUSEUM OF LANDS, MAPPING AND SURVEYING

The museum collects mapping and surveying objects, and many historical maps of Queensland as well as diaries, artwork, photographs and biographies. These capture the personal and social history of those involved in surveying and mapping our unique state.
